Volunteer Opportunities with M-SPAN
M-SPAN’s Programs for Military Families offer many exciting volunteer opportunities for students, veterans, and community members. We believe in training the next generation of service providers – starting with undergraduate students. We also work to involve veterans, especially student veterans, on our teams because their unique insight adds to the overall strength of our programs. Community members of all ages also have the opportunity to work with our programs on Child Teams and in research.
We offer hands-on experience working with our programs. Students and trainees may spend time working directly with Children and families on the Child Team, attending events and seminars, collecting and entering data, and even coding and data analysis for more experienced candidates. These experiences allow students and trainees to cultivate a deeper understanding of military families while developing new skill sets.

Undergraduate and Graduate Students are an important part of our programs’ implementation. Students comprise our Child Teams and assist with our research regularly. We offer various opportunities for students that will provide valuable experience. We may also offer course credit and work study positions to highly qualified students. We believe that students benefit from being closely involved with the research and clinical aspects of programs.
While working with our programs, students will:
- Gain a deeper understanding of military family life.
- Learn about research best practices.
- Work with the Child Team or Research Team.
- Read and study curriculum for children and families.
- Learn data entry, coding, and/or analysis.
- Great opportunity to work with military kids.
We welcome students from all disciplines, though these opportunities may be particularly beneficial to psychology and social work students to further develop clinical and observational skills.
Members of the community who are not current students are welcome to apply to volunteer with M-SPAN’s Military Family Programs. While students will be given priority, community members who wish to volunteer are still welcome to apply with M-SPAN’s Child and Family Programs.
