Jason Savage of Johnson County Community College is the Peer Advisor of the Month! Jason served in the Army Reserves as a Chinook helicopter mechanic and flight engineer and is studying information technology at JCC. He plans to pursue a career in database management or software development. JCC’s Team Leader Donny Whitton nominated Jason, saying that he goes above and beyond what is asked of Peer Advisors, does extra outreach, is diligent about logging interactions, and even asks to be assigned to work with more student vets.
Jason says he enjoys the opportunity to connect with other vets at school through PAVE, particularly since he’s often the only veteran in his classes. While he’s been able to assist numerous student vets, he’s gravitated towards helping those who are in the same degree program. One of his most notable experiences as a Peer Advisor was when he was able to support another student vet who was having financial and relationship issues by helping him get into counseling. He reports that he’s now doing much better. Jason thinks that the vet wouldn’t have opened up to anyone else about those issues, but felt comfortable with him since he’d been reaching out to him consistently. We’re so glad you’re a Peer Advisor, Jason!
