October 2024 Peer Advisor of the Month: Azjaah Smith, University of Michigan – Flint

From Helen Budd, Veteran Services Coordinator, University of Michigan – Flint: “Azjaah is a natural Peer Advisor! She is also a peer mentor with the campus Success Peer Mentor program, so the PAVE program is a natural fit! Azjaah is outgoing, always diligent about reaching out to her advisees, and has shown significant leadership in her role, including giving her advisees a tour of the campus during the first week that classes began! Way to go, Azjaah!”

From Azjaah Smith: “My favorite part about being a Peer Advisor is when my peers come to me asking for help, guidance, simple questions, advice, etc. That lets me know that I have created a safe space that they feel comfortable with sharing/coming to me. I believe everyone needs a person they can go to. I would like to think that my work as a Peer Advisor is to reassure other student vets that they are not alone in this journey. It makes it better to have someone that relates to you and you can share laughs with along the way!”
