November/December 2024 Peer Advisor of the Month: Heiko Grant, University of Washington – Tacoma

From Kaily White, Veteran Services Coordinator, University of Washington – Tacoma: “Heiko Grant is an outstanding Peer Advisor at UW Tacoma. As a retired Special Forces Army Warrant Officer, he brings unmatched experience and a genuinely humble approach to his work, making a lasting difference for military-connected students. Over the past year, Heiko has provided steady guidance and support, with students often asking for him specifically because of his popularity and reliability within the veteran community.

Heiko’s approach to mentorship goes far beyond typical advising. Meeting regularly with his advisees — sometimes even weekly — he helps them set long-term goals and navigate any concerns they have about adjusting to student life. By sharing personalized content and resources, he creates an inviting space where students feel comfortable reaching out, strengthening their connections with him and each other. He’s also committed to breaking down the stigma around veteran identity in higher ed, making both veterans and student dependents feel welcome and understood. Despite his heavy workload pursuing his Master’s in Accounting, Heiko continues to show exceptional dedication to UW-Tacoma’s campus and veteran community. His commitment to growth, learning, and community-building makes him a true role model for his peers and an ideal example of what it means to be an exceptional Peer Advisor.”

From Heiko Grant: “I don’t expect that my work as a Peer Advisor is having a profound effect on the college experience of our student veterans; instead, I strive to be at least a small yet consistently positive memory in their journey. Ready with answers to questions and concerns, enabling access to resources, facilitating amazing connections with both veteran and non-veteran peers for social events are all part of a regular week. Fortunately, we have a wonderful group of student veterans who love supporting us just as much as we love supporting them. They are my favorite part of being a Peer Advisor; they allow me to continue to serve and have purpose.”
